چکیده

This paper is about the relationships between Preference Semantics (PS) and illformedness , and between Preference Semantics and metaphor. Two types of "preference", declarative and procedural, are distinguished. The PS framework is examined with respect to notions of welland il l-formedness, and two criteria for i l l -formedness are distinguished, both of which are possessed by PS: an absolute criterion that corresponds to conventional notions of welland il l-formedness, and a relative criterion that does not. Four possible strategies are described for representing il l-formed input in general, and metaphors in particular. The strategies and the semantic representations produced by them are compared regarding their correspondence to human understanding (admittedly superficial given the shallowness of the PS representation) and their ability to produce correct sentence translations. We conclude that, because of the ambiguity of many individual and extended metaphors, two broad types of metaphor representation strategy are needed. A control mechanism is described that uses both these major types of strategy and that permits the temporary semantic representation of metaphorical ambiguity.

Dynamic Categorization of Semantics of Fashion Language: A Memetic Approach

Categories are not invariant. This paper attempts to explore the dynamic nature of semantic category, in particular, that of fashion language, based on the cognitive theory of Dawkins’ memetics, a new theory of cultural evolution. Semantic attributes of linguistic memes decrease or proliferate in replication and spreading, which involves a dynamic development of semantic category. More specific...

L2 Learners’ Stylistic Penchant and Perceived Aptness for Metaphors and Similes

Aptness, defined as how the vehicle is well able to cover the salient features of the tenor (e.g., oil is like liquid gold vs. a train is like a worm), is claimed to be an important factor in the preference for metaphors over similes, or vice versa. This study was an attempt to test for the supposed correlation between the perceived degree of aptness and a priori stylistic preference for metaph...

Metaphor, Semantic Preferences and Context-Sensitivity

In this chapter, the main reference point in Yorick Wilks’s work is Wilks (1978). This extends his preferencebased semantics (Wilks, 1975) to handling metaphor. Wilks (1978) covers a number of issues that deserve fresh comment and that are central to problems about metaphor that are still unresolved—theoretically, let alone computationally. Also, the legacy of the 1978 work stretched through to...

Metonymy and metaphor: what's the difference

The tt,ee main features of tile computational approach are that: (a) literahtess, metaphor, and anomaly share common features and form a group distinct from metonymy which has characteristics that requires a quite different treatment; (b) chains of metonymies occur, supporting an observation by Reddy (1979); and (c) metonymies can co-occur with instances of either literalness, metaphor, or anom...

More Heads and Less Categories: A New Look at Noun Phrase Structure

Much literature in syntax has assumed that all noun phrases are categorically headed by the determiner or the noun, with well-formedness categorial in nature. In this paper I develop a theory of noun phrase structure in which both categories project noun phrases, arguing that this better fits the indeterminacy of the criteria often cited for determining headedness (Zwicky, 1985, inter alia). Th...
